The 10,000km Long March
- Done by communists to escape harassment by the Nationalists in
1934-1935
- Mao Zedong became communist leader
- WW2 resulted in various Chinese political groups working together
o Shared military resources to fight Japanese invaders
- 1946 conflict started and led to a civil war
- 1949 the Guomindang (Nationalists) were defeated at Nanjing
o Forced to flee to Taiwan
o Communist rule was established in PRC un Mao
The Long March:
- Was a long journey across China in 1934/5
- Led by Mao Zedong and his communist army to reach a new base
(NW of China)
- Dangerous as marchers were often attacked by enemies
- Many died on route
- One a third survived the march

What policies did Mao implement once he was in power?
- Government similar to Lenin’s was set up
o Legislative authority was the National Peoples’ Congress
- Mao was elected the first Chairman of the PRC
o He was a dictator
o China became a one party state
o Communist party = only party (still today)
- Focused on improving industries, agriculture, education and
healthcare
o Also changed attitude towards women being second class
- Implemented a second five-year plan called The Great Leap Forward
o Ensured China remained in peasants and workers hands
o To solve unemployment and raise money to build industries
