1st&2nd order cybernetics
First order approach seeks objective observati ons and look to facts and use these facts to create a hypothesis, this approach takes an
in-depth look at the degree of openness and closeness of the relationship between stability and change, as well as the relation of this
towards order.
The second order approach main focus lies not on a specific change but rather looks to highlight the meanings and understandings of
thought negotiation between the client and the Therapist.
‘This is done through conversations where by both parties re-envision memories and past events and further discuss the importance
of these past memoirs.’’ This approach makes use of the environment as a change agent. (Griffith & Griffith, 1992).
Second Order change speaks to the relationship whereby the Therapist and the client together create new and break down old
context or histories through narratives of mutual interaction and feedback. This change system is not attempting change systems but
rather create an environment that yields an outcome that is a logical response
Both first and second order approaches see change in the system as requiring change in context.
