Q- WHAT IS A SOCIETY

A society is a combination of communities. It is comprised of individuals and communities
residing in a specific geographical region, each with their distinct requirements and
characters.

Q- WHAT IS A STATE

According to Bekker, a state must have its own territory, citizens, government and
sovereignty.

Loxton further went on to say that a state does not exist for itself, but it exist in order to
provide each individual with the opportunity to live a life of natural perfection.

Q-SERVICES TO SOCIETY

1. PROTECTIVE SERVICE

Ensuring the safety of both society and the belongings of its members, as well as safe-
guarding the state from external threats, is crucial. Similarly, addressing any injustices
occurring within the national borders is also essential. For instance the South African
National Defence Force and the South African Police services could be maintaining
boarder security to prevent illegal smuggling and implement measures to prevent terrorist
threats from entering the country. The South African Police Services will also be the first
line l can call for protective services should there be a neighbour troubling me or someone
that broke into my house.

2. WEALTH-CREATING SERVICES

These are all services with the creation, dissemination, and utilisation of goods and
services. For instance the South African Revenue (SARS) that contributes primarily
through its role in taxation. By collecting taxes from individuals and businesses, SARS
help generate revenue for the government, which can then be used for public services
and infrastructure development. This taxation system also supports economic growth by
funds for essential services such as education, healthcare and transportation to mention

, a few, which in return contribute to the overall well-being and productivity of the
population. SARS enforces tax compliance, ensuring that businesses and individuals
contribute their fair share towards wealth creation and economic stability.

3. PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES

Public health services play a crucial role in safe-guarding the health of the population and
promoting the collective well-being of the society. They provide a range of essential
services, from preventative care, screening to treatment for illness and injuries. These
services are available to everyone, regardless of one’s financial situation, who they are
or where they are from. Their facilities include clinics and hospitals. For instance when I
am sick, I can access public health services in a public clinic or hospital where l will be
given care and treatment I need to recover and stay healthy.

4. WELFARE AND HOUSING

Welfare and housing provide support to underprivileged individuals in society to enhance
their standard of living. For instance the Department of Social Development coordinates
and implements welfare programs and services across the country one of them being
financial assistance being provided those in need through social grants , food vouchers,
to mention a few, to help alleviate poverty and meet basic needs. Individuals and families
with limited financial means can also be given opportunities for low-cost rental or home
ownership by the Department of Human Settlement which works to improve access to
safe and affordable housing, promote sustainable human settlements, and enhance the
quality of life for all citizens.

5. CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICES

Intended to address the cognitive, ethical, aesthetic, religious and leisure requirements
of society. Cultural services promote cultural diversity, heritage preservation and
community engagement across the country. For instance we have cultural institutions
such as museums, galleries and heritage sites that showcase South African’s rich cultural
history and artistic achievements which is overseen by the Department of Sports, Art and
Culture.
