Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace is the London residence and principal workplace of the monarchy of the United
Kingdom, located in the City of Westminster. The palace is often at the center of the occasions and
royal hospitality.

History

Buckingham palace, originally known as Buckingham house, was a large townhouse built for the Duke
of Buckingham in 1703. In 1761, it was used by King George III as a private home for Queen Charlotte
and was known as 'the Queen's House'. Later , in the 19 th century, it was enlarged. Three wings were
formed around the central courtyard. Finally, on the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837, became
Buckingham palace the official royal palace of the British monarch.

Court ceremonies

The Ballroom is the largest room at Buckingham Palace. It was added by Queen Victoria and is used
for ceremonies such as investitures and state banquets.

 Investitures

During investitures, the Queen stands on the throne dais beneath a giant, domed, velvet canopy,
which is known as a baldachin. A military band plays in the musicians’ gallery as award recipients
approach the Queen and receive their honours, watched by their families and friends.

 State banquets

These formal dinners take place on the first evening of a state visit by a visiting Head of State. On
these occasions, there are 150 or more guests in formal ‘white tie and decorations’, including tiaras
for women.

 Other ceremonies

Smaller ceremonies take place in the ‘1844 Room’. Also, here holds the Queen small lunch parties
and often meetings. Larger lunch parties often take place in the Music Room or the State Dining
Room.

 Garden Parties
