ASSESSMENT 2
COMPULSORY FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT: 100 MARKS (10 % WEIGHTING)

This assessment comprises application of knowledge questions that require your active
engagement with the content, critical thinking and reflective responses that show that you are
able to develop theme plans in accordance with your interpretation of the content and context.

Section A: Preparation for your assessment

To complete this assessment, you will first need to access the following resources:

• Department of Basic Education. (2011). Curriculum and Assessment Policy (CAPS) Life
Skills for Foundation Phase. Pretoria: Department of Basic Education.
• LSK3701. (2021). Life Skills: Science and Technology in Foundation Phase.
Revise what you have learnt about the nature of science in learning unit 1 and the
process skills that develop learners’ understanding of the nature of science in learning
unit 2.
Look at specifically learning unit 3, Planning for science teaching and assessment.
Understand section B (learning units 4 to 6) regarding technology education.
• Other sources that may be useful in teaching science include websites, articles, and so
on.

Next, you will have to reflect on which topic and grade to focus on to complete this
assignment:

Consult CAPS (Life Skills Gr R–3) and explore the various topics listed in the different
grades that can be used when teaching science to learners.
Consider a grade (Gr R–3) as the basis on which to complete this assignment.

, Finally, you must select a specific topic and grade in the foundation phase
syllabus to complete this assessment.

1. For this assignment, use the topic, water, in your chosen grade.
2. Consult CAPS (Life Skills Foundation Phase) and explore the topic noted above.
Choose one of the themes based on water and identify the science concept (big idea)
you will be teaching. Do an internet search on the topic (water), the selected theme
and the science concept embedded in it. Also use the resources recommended above to
get ideas for teaching science based on the topic and theme.

 SECTION B: COMPLETION OF YOUR ASSESSMENT

All your answers must be based on the water topic and the theme and grade you
selected. Refer to the teaching ideas and apply the knowledge you have gained to answer
the questions below.

, QUESTION 1:

1.1 Scientific knowledge and concepts are classified or grouped into content areas, also
called knowledge strands.

Choose which of the FOUR (4) science content strands describe the content of
your theme plan.

The theme plan for teaching about water aligns primarily with the planet Earth and beyond

1.1.2 Motivate your choice.

Because, water is everywhere and covers a big part of the Earth and is super important for life.
Learning about water means understanding where it is, how it moves around, and why it's so
essential for the planet. This fits nicely with the idea of studying Earth and everything around it.

Water isn't just something we find on the surface of the Earth. It's also in the air we breathe,
under the ground, and crucial for plants and animals. Exploring how water connects to different
parts of the Earth is a big part of this category.

It helps understand the environment, we often talk about things like pollution, saving water, and
how climate change affects it. These topics are all about how Earth works and how we can
take care of it. So, learning about water fits right into understanding our planet better.

So, because water is so important for Earth, how it's connected to everything, and how it
relates to environmental issues, it makes sense to put it in the "planet Earth and beyond"
category.

1.2 Big concepts are not taught as topics on their own, but are ideas that link several
topics to organise and categorise information.

1.2.1 W h i c h of the (CAPS Social Science) big ideas described in unit 2 will be
appropriate to weave through your theme plan?

My theme plan in teaching science to the foundation phase, the CAPS Social Science big idea
that would be appropriate is "relationships and interdependence.

1.2.2 Give reasons for your choice.

Relevance to Science Learning
This big idea emphasizes understanding how things are connected and rely on each other. In
science, it's crucial for young learners to grasp the interconnectedness of scientific concepts
