Momentum and Impulse
1.1 Momentum

 The product of the mass and velocity of an object.
 If an object is moving and has mass, then it has momentum.
 Momentum is a vector and is directly proportional to velocity.

p=m×v

o p= momentum (kg.m.s-1)
o m= mass (kg)
o v= velocity (m.s-1)

 The amount of force acting on an object depends on the object’s mass and how quickly the
object moves.

1.2 Change in Momentum
 The momentum of an object changes when a resultant/net force acts on the object.
 If an object's mass remains constant, then change in momentum will have been caused by
change in velocity.
p=pf -pi

p=mvf-mvi

p=m(vf-vi)

p= change in momentum
pf= final momentum
pi= initial momentum

1.3 Newton’s 2nd LAW in terms of momentum
 The net force acting on an object is equal to Rate of change of momentum of the object in
the direction of the net force.
Fnet= p/ t Fnet=ma

Fnet=(m v)/ t

Fnet= p/ t
