Question 2
2.1 Nature and Origin of Science:
Natural Science involves finding out and making sense of the natural world. Natural Science
is stuck on the belief that nature is comprehensible, which means that it is rationally
ordered and can be known and understood. The subject combines direct, experimental
investigation of nature with reasons, inductive logical thinking in order to interpret, explain
and make theories about the patterns observed in nature.

2.2 Why is NS education valuable?
Science and Technology have played roles of improving the material quality of life and their
part in eliminating many diseases, pests and famine. NS has some moral value.
 NS education provides experiences that can lead to the development of basic
scientific literacy. Children need to become scientific literate in order to function
effectively in a contemporary society and economy that rely heavily on science and
technology.
 NS education provides a basic understanding of nature and everyday technological
devices. Children who perceive NST as being understandable develop greater
confidence.
 NS education contributes to community upliftment by developing scientific literate
people who can cope with basic socio-scientific problems.
 NS education develops a spirit of inquiry necessary for lifelong learning.
 NS education helps create awareness for nature and the environment.

2.3 Criteria for meaningful activities:
 Activities should be appropriate to the age and the grade of the learners and the
knowledge and skills that they have learnt.
 Learners should have sufficient and correct prior knowledge to understand the
activity.
 The purpose of the activity should be explained.
 Class should be controlled-no unproductive playing around.
