- Local food production provides for the need of a wide range
of products.
- Food security means that all people have daily access to
enough safe and nutritious food to lead a active and
healthy life.

FOOD AVAILABILITY:
Where nutritious, safe food is available on a regular basis to all
citizens.
FOOD ACCESSABILITY:
Where all people have enough resources to access food and
water.
FOOD UTILIAZATION:
If government ensures food availability and accessibility, it’s the
consumers’ responsibility to use their knowledge of nutrition to
make safe use of food and water.
*Food is still nor accessible due to:
- Unemployment resulting in poverty.
- Low-income levels.
- Limited socials services.
- Insufficient information, education and knowledge about
nutrition and hygiene.
- HIV/AIDS
Self-sufficiency, exports, and imports:
- Many farmers are partially self-sufficient as they use some of
their own products.
- Many town residents are self-sufficient by having free range
chickens or grow their own veg and herbs for health reasons,
and because it’s cheaper.
- Very few who are fully self-sufficient.
- South Africa is considered a country with food security, its
self0sufficnet and an exporter.
