and disasters
Ill- health, accidents, crises and disasters
= Human factors which cause these things are NOT out of our control
This means we are the causes of certain disasters- which could be prevented, avoided or
controlled.
Definitions:
Ill-health: Illness, sickness; a medical condition that makes you unwell
Accidents: mishaps, misfortunes
Crises: emergencies, calamities, catastrophes, upheavals
Disasters: Tragedies, events that cause devastation
STI’s: An infection that is spread through person-too-person sexual contact.
1) Ill-health
This means you are sick. Bad lifestyle choices- unprotected sex, smoking, alcohol abuse
ect can result in sexually transmitted infections, lung cancer and liver disease.
2) Accidents
Happen when unexpected and unplanned bad things happen to a person.
Examples- traffic accidents caused when someone drives under the influence of
alcohol.
Fire accidents- when someone leaves a candle burning near a curtain.
Burn accidents – pot of boiling water or oil is left near a child.
3) Crises
An emergency situation that causes great distress and upheaval.
, Examples: Husband leaves wife for another woman and children are left without food
on the table.
People stealing copper cables on train tracks – people are late for work and school as
a result.
4) Disaster
A great tragedy or devastation caused by nature or people.
Examples: using rivers for their waste therefore contaminating water. People can then
contract Cholera through the usage of contaminated water.
Factories dispose of toxic waste in rivers and destroy living organisms and humans get
sick from drinking it.
During wars- people bomb cities and towns, destroying homes and causing huge
disasters.
Sports fans enter a stadium, too many people climb onto a stand and it collapses
under the weight.
Psychological, social and religious factors, cultural practices and different
knowledge perspectives
Definitions
Cultural Practices: Rites or regular activities done by people of the same origin
Knowledge perspectives: Facts and information seen from a particular viewpoint, outlook, or
angle.
Foetal Alcohol Syndrome: A condition that results from alcohol abuse by the mother during
pregnancy.
Psychological Factors that cause ill-health
Mental and emotional aspects of being a human being
Sometimes illness can cause emotional and psychological effects and vice versa.
E.g., contracting HIV- depressed and stressed.
