As a new lecturer for IOP2601 module, you are given a summary report of student performance
in the module based on previous registration periods during 2021 to 2023. The report also
provides information on student profile, data collected from surveys, etc. The following
questions will be based on the information provided from the report.

QUESTION 1 [8]

(a) The summary report includes both descriptive and inferential statistics. Distinguish
between these two categories of statistical methods and techniques. Provide
examples. (2)

(b) Some of the information is presented in histograms, therefore you need to differentiate
between negatively skewed and positively skewed. Also, explain what these mean in
relation to student performance. (4)

(c) Distinguish between the measures of central tendency and measures of variability. (2)

(a) Distinguishing between Descriptive and Inferential Statistics: Descriptive Statistics:
Descriptive statistics involve methods and techniques used to summarize and describe data.
These statistics provide a clear and concise summary of the main characteristics of a dataset.
Examples of descriptive statistics include measures of central tendency (mean, median,
mode), measures of variability (range, variance, standard deviation), and graphical
representations (histograms, bar charts, pie charts). For example, calculating the average
exam score of students in the IOP2601 module for a particular year is a descriptive statistic.
