ASSESSMENT 03
MARKS: 100
MEMO QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
This assessment is ELECTIVE and contributes 25% to your final mark for this
module.
Answer ALL the questions.
Open date: 26 June 2023, 08:00.
Due date: 2 August 2023, 18:00.
Activity 1
1.1.1 ) 1. Water scarcity and pollution: South Africa faces significant water scarcity and
pollution. The country experiences droughts on a regular basis, and pollution from
industrial activities and mining activities has led to the contamination of rivers and other
water sources.

2. Deforestation and habitat loss: South Africa has lost a large portion of its forests, and
the remaining forests are threatened by logging and deforestation for commercial and
agricultural purposes. This has led to habitat loss for wildlife and a decline in
biodiversity.

3. Air pollution and climate change: South Africa's industrial and transportation sectors
are major contributors to air pollution, which has negative impacts on public health and
the environment. The country is also highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change,
including sea level rise, increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events,
and changes in rainfall patterns.

1.1.2 Discuss the implications of the above-mentioned environmental
challenges.
Environmental issues such as air pollution, water pollution, deforestation and climate
change have negative effects on both the environment and the people in the
community.

, Air pollution, for instance, can lead to respiratory problems, such as asthma and lung
cancer, especially for people living in areas with high levels of pollutants. High levels of
pollution can also harm trees, soil and water sources, reducing the overall health of the
ecosystem.

Water pollution can lead to contaminated drinking water, causing health problems to
people living in the area. It can also damage habitats for aquatic species, leading to
ecological disasters and loss of biodiversity.

Deforestation leads to habitat loss, which can reduce the plant and animal species living
in the area. The removal of trees also reduces carbon sequestration, ensuring that less
carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere naturally, and amplifying the effects of
climate change.

Climate change is a global problem that affects people and the environment. It leads to
more frequent and severe natural disasters such as floods, droughts, and storms.
These catastrophes can devastate communities, lead to the destruction of crops,
homes, and infrastructure, and can lead to fatalities.

In conclusion, the negative effects of environmental issues are innumerable. They have
the potential to threaten the health and well-being of both the environment and the
people in the community. It's crucial that individuals and communities take an active role
in addressing these issues and finding solutions to mitigate their effects.
