AUGUSTAN POETRY
Main components.
• Humour.
• Satire (mocks people for doing bad things or strange things).
- Relies on humour and exaggeration.
THE HEROIC COUPLET
The form
• The dominant form.
• Two lines of iambic pentameter (there are also instances of tetrameter, revise
meter)
• Good for comparing and making judgements.
• Shows reason and logic.
• AA.
• Can put many together to form poems.
Rhetorical features
• Balance.
- Using syntax as a way to create balance in the couplet.
- Eg. (The cat) sat {on the mat}
(The dog) lay {on the bed}.
• Antithesis.
- Using similar syntax to show for contrasting phrases.
• Chiasmus.
