Context
➔ Massive settlement of Europeans, about 40 000
➔ Situated on coast: easy trade on India Ocean + fertile land
➔ Kikuyu tribe is nomadic → land taken by settlers
◆ Around 20% of population is Kikuyu
◆ They allow Kikuyu to work but most have to leave area → increasing
rural population
➔ Also large Indian settlement who worked there

◆ Raised popularity of KAU but denounced violence of Mau Mau
◆ 1952: arrested for allegedly masterminding Mau Mau
◆ 1960: President of KANU (Kenyan African National Union) still in prison
◆ Released in 1961 ahead of election

◆ 1960 split led to KADU (Kenyan African Democratic Union)
◆ Leader of KADU
