Introduction
As a student, I will explore how gangs operate in prisons and how they maintain their focus
on their intentions, objectives, aims, goals, and modus operandi. I will also discuss the
impact of gangs on prison management and rehabilitation, as well as remark on a fellow
student's work.
Question 1
Gang activity is one of the most serious issues that South African correctional officials must
address. Gangs are not only responsible for much of the unrest at jail facilities, but they are
also directly accountable for a high number of assaults, smuggling escapes, and sexual
misconduct committed by correctional centre inmates.
THE 28 GANG
Goals
According to the gang orders, the 28 gang is involved in "blood" and the "correctional
centre." They are fighters who retain "boy wives" ("wyfies") and are required to "repair the
jail" when conditions fall short of their expectations. They are also concerned about the
, quality of food and food safety as well as actively participate in actions such as rioting, and
disturbance aimed at making the prison unmanageable.
Modus operandi
When they are unhappy with the meal, the "doctor" or "inspector" (part of their
hierarchy structure) will notify the correctional official in charge. If the situation does
not improve, they resolve to fix it by stabbing or assaulting the cooks (offenders) who
prepare the meals. When the gang believes there are "wrongs" in a detention facility,
they will attempt to rectify them by assaulting correctional authorities to bring
attention to their grievances. In jail facilities, they take part in rioting and unrest. This
is in line with their goal of making the prison uncontrollable. Non-gang members are
frequently targeted.
THE 26 GANG
Goals
Comfort and convenience “kroon” are affiliated with the 26 gang. They acquire
goods, money, and drugs through crafty activities like robbery, theft, and smuggling,
which facilitate them to live a luxurious life. This gang also adheres to a rigid code of
behavior and punishes gang members who violate it. This code of conduct is founded
on the premise that there is only one "gate" into the gang and no "gate" out - implying
complete devotion to the gang and the contents of the "book" containing the gang's
code of conduct.
Modus operandi
The 26 gang's code of conduct prohibits escapes and sexual acts. The 26 gang meets in a
semi-circle on a regular basis. This is referred to as "kringsit." Decisions are made and
orders are provided during "kringsit," which generally include violence. When there are a lot
of staff members on duty, the 26 gang commits violent acts at night.
THE BIG 5 GANG (THE GERMANYS)
Goals
The stated purpose of their collaboration with authorizes is to safeguard themselves and
their fellow inmates. The Big 5 gang is obsessed with sodomy and smuggling.
Modus operandi
They are continuously at odds with the other gangs since their goal is to "piemp" (tell tales).
Gang members are typically from the so-called "agterryers" (outrider" cleaners and orderlies)
and utilize their position of trust to mobilize and conceal their smuggling activities. The
gang's code of conduct includes the practice of sodomy.

The Air Force gang, also known as the Royal Air Force or Air Force 24, has stated that their
goal is to flee. Their "goods" are in Africa (outside the prison) and must be safeguarded. This
is only feasible if they are outside of the prison, which is only achievable through escapes.
