a) Briefly explain what consanguinity in the collateral line means. (2)

Descendant from an indirect ancestral relationship or is the relationship between persons who
have a common ancestor but do not ascend or descend from one another.



(b) May persons who are related by consanguinity in the collateral line enter into a civil
marriage with each other? Explain your answer with reference to authority. (2)

Ascendants or descendants in the direct line may not marry. The law distinguishes between
relation by consanguinity and affinity. The main quencequences of relationships by blood is the
duty of support. Also, In law, a prohibited degree of kinship refers to a degree of consanguinity
(blood relatedness).



(c) Mr and Mrs A have a daughter, Delila. Delila marries Peter, who is the son of Mr and
Mrs Y. Delila and Peter have a son, Steven.



(i) May Steven enter into a civil marriage with Mrs A? Answer “Yes” or “No”, and
explain your answer with reference to authority. (3)

No, Steven cannot marry because their marriage also falls under the prohibited degrees of
marriage steven is related to Mrs A by Consanguinity in the direct line.
