Cohesive devices are important in creating a coherent text. Three cohesive devices
used in Text A are reference, conjunctions, and lexical cohesion.
Conjunctions: Conjunctions are words that link ideas or clauses within a sentence or between
sentences. In TEXT A, conjunctions such as "but", "also", "when", "if", and "then" are used to
connect ideas and create logical relationships between them. For example, in the sentence
"Having more than one mother tongue can be a challenge, but to a child’s advantage," the
conjunction "but" is used to contrast two ideas and show that having more than one mother
tongue has both positive and negative aspects. Similarly, in the sentence "If a word does not
exist in the home language, they borrow the word from another language," the conjunction "if"
introduces a conditional clause and shows the reader how multilingual speakers deal with gaps
in their vocabulary.
