RELIANCE ON ELECTRONIC DEVICES DIMINISHES US

Science and technology have evolved over the years. Innovation and creativity are a priority
to ensure that new and improved devices are constantly being produced. With each new
model comes enhancements and features that aim to assist us with daily living activities. We
now have applications that can track almost all aspects of our day. What we eat, where we
go, how we drive, our vitals, and even how long we slept. Our devices are the assistants that
help us navigate our lives. But, are all these services enhancing us or making us reliant on
them in a negative way?

The COVID-19 pandemic forced us to remodel various sectors. Devices helped to transition
from doing more work activities from home. The education sector benefited from this and
prevented the lockdowns from causing catastrophic learning disruptions for the academic
year. Students were able to work from home and continue with their syllabus. However, this
new learning environment brought about social and health problems for children. The lack
of in contact learning coupled with no contact with peers created poor social skills and
isolation. According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC) Annual
Statistical Report, extended screen time causes musculoskeletal, eye, and posture problems.

Devices catapulted online digital marketing platforms. Companies are now able to expand
their footprint exponentially due to online platforms. The result of this is greater profits. An
article done by Mary Nestor-Harper on The Disadvantages of Technology in the Workplace
confirms that the use of the digital world has made people's posts redundant causing job
losses.

Devices allow users to be able to access any information they want. There is no longer the
need to go into a library. All research can be done from the confines of your home. Your
output in terms of production and creativity improves. However, this leads to a lack of
activity and a sedentary lifestyle. Listening to stories from my parents about their research
efforts at school seems prehistoric. They had to visit libraries and make notes from
encyclopedias. Device use removes the life experiences of real-time exploration. These
physical encounters with the real world build character and make one more self-reliant and
sufficient.

Unlimited access to devices can cause age-inappropriate material to be viewed. Research
conducted by Coiera E. Technology, cognition, and error, states that this creates a warped
sense of reality and puts the user in potential danger by exposing them to harmful content.
Some platforms are not secure and personal information can be used to stalk or defraud the
users.

Devices give us the ability to be more productive by being comprehensive tools that can
perform multiple operations to improve functionality. These tools can also become a
distraction example social media platforms. Undisciplined users could constantly check in on
their social media platforms or be disturbed by messages that cause them to lose focus and
ultimately become unproductive.
