 An organization’s statement of purpose
 Requires forward thinking with end result in mind
 Good mission statement= provides S&C program with focus and direction and is foundation of effective
administration
 Suggested criteria for an effective mission statement:
o It should be short and sharply focused
o It should be clear and easy to understand
o It defines why the organization exists
o It does not prescribe means
o It is broad in scope
o It provides direction for upholding code of ethics
o It addresses and matches the organization’s scope of practice
o It inspires commitment
 Addresses three important components:
1. Target clientele (key market)
2. What service is being provided (contribution)
3. What makes the service unique (distinction)

 Effective S&C program should = based on scientific principles to enhance performance and increase injury
