Mission Statement
An organization’s statement of purpose
Requires forward thinking with end result in mind
Good mission statement= provides S&C program with focus and direction and is foundation of effective
administration
Suggested criteria for an effective mission statement:
o It should be short and sharply focused
o It should be clear and easy to understand
o It defines why the organization exists
o It does not prescribe means
o It is broad in scope
o It provides direction for upholding code of ethics
o It addresses and matches the organization’s scope of practice
o It inspires commitment
Addresses three important components:
1. Target clientele (key market)
2. What service is being provided (contribution)
3. What makes the service unique (distinction)
Program Goals
Desired end products of a S&C program, stated in a broad general manner
Effective S&C program should = based on scientific principles to enhance performance and increase injury
resistance with potential outcomes specific to the sport and the athlete’s position within the sport
Developing a standard of care = collaborative responsibility
Developing mission statement should involve:
o S&C department
o Institution
o Athletic admin.
o Sports medicine department
