Topic Summary Information: Rate and Extent of Reaction

Factors important for any reaction to occur
Collision Theory
According to the Collision Theory, a reaction between two substances A and B can only
take place if the molecules (particles) of A collide with the molecules (particles) of B.
1. Particles must possess sufficient activation energy so that it can overcome the
forces of repulsion and thereafter bond.
2. Particles must have correct orientation (correctly aligned).
Factors affecting the rate of the reaction
1. Temperature: A change in temperature causes a change in the average kinetic
energy of the particles.

 Increase in temp increases the average kinetic energy of particles,

 which increases the speed of movement, and there are more particles having
minimum kinetic energy in order to bond

 which increases number of collisions per unit time,

 which increases the number of effective (successful) collisions per unit time,

 which increases the rate of the reaction.

2. Surface area (Solids): A larger surface area increases the rate of the reaction. (Big
lump = small surface and small grains / powder = larger surface).

 Increase in surface area,
