NEWTON’S LAWS

Force
 A push or pull on an object in an attempt to change the object’s
state of rest or motion
 Has magnitude and direction
 Measured in Newtons (N)

Tension
 Force that is transmitted through a string, rope, cable or wire when
it is pulled tight by forces acting on opposite ends

Normal force
 The force or component of a force which a surface exerts on an
object with which it is in contact, and which is perpendicular to the
surface

Gravitational force
 The Earth exerts a gravitational force on any object on or near its
surface, known as weight
 Non-contact force
 Fg= mg (g=9,8 ms-2)
 9,8 ms-2is gravitational acceleration
 Directed downwards towards the centre of the Earth

Frictional Force

 A contact force that opposes the motion of an object and which
acts parallel to the surface

Static Frictional force
 The force that opposes the tendency of motion of a stationary
object relative to a surface
 Ranges from 0fsmax
Maximum Static friction
 Affected by two factors:
1. Normal force
2. Material of the surfaces

Co-efficient of friction
 Value that is experimentally determined and depends on the two
materials interaction
 Ranges from 0-1
