, 1. INTRODUCTION TO MY
PORTFOLIO
Doing this module, AFL1501: Language through an African Lens required me to take a
long, hard look at myself. And if I were to take this module seriously and pass it well, I
would have to search deep within my heart into places that I had buried in me. Going
through each Activity and each assignment, I had to peel away the layers of my own
identity and I needed courage to be able to put my heart and soul into this
module…….This portfolio is a culmination of months of hard work and it would not be
possible without my Teaching Assistant Dr Gerda Mischke. Thank you Dr Mischke.
In this portfolio is my own personal reflection on what it means to be an Indian living and
having grown up in this beautiful, culturally diverse and unique land we call South
Africa. Although there has been a lot of pain and suffering that span decades, there has
also been a lot of healing and love. Along with the numerous cultures, there are apart
from the 11 official languages are so many others that form the basis of what this
portfolio represents. In it I will explain to you what language diversity means to me, take
you on a journey of discovery through the branches on my family (My Family Tree) as
well as reflect on a cultural ceremony through my eyes. There is rich History that blows
through the leaves of trees and is carried by the winds from every corner, we are all
connected. It is also a reflection of my Indian background and my Language history.
I am a proud South African Indian and this is my story…
