Die Negatief of Ontkennende Vorm-
The Negative Form
Take note of the verb in the sentence.
If we are given a regular sentence, we always use two nies
The first nie comes after the verb, the second nie goes to the
end (NB! Do not forget the second nie!! )
E.g. Ek lees
Ek lees nie (There is only one nie because there is no
object)
E.g. Ek lees ‘n boek
Ek lees nie ‘n boek nie
E.g. Ek lees ‘n interessante boek op die bus
Ek lees nie ‘n interessante boek op die bus nie
If the first verb is followed by a pronoun or a proper noun,
the first nie comes directly after it
E.g. Ek roep hom
Ek roep hom nie
E.g. Ek bel Pieter op sy selfoon
Ek bel Pieter nie op sy selfoon nie
If we are asked a question, we answer with nee, a nie after
the verb and a nie at the end
(We recognise it as a question, because it will start with a verb
and end with a question mark.)
Nee= no
nie = not
E.g., Is dit vandag koud?
Nee, dit is nie vandag koud nie
E.g. Speel die kinders tennis?
Nee, die kinders speel nie tennis nie
We change the pronoun so that it makes correct sense
E.g. Hou jy van skool?
