Lipids include:
1. neutral fats, known as fats/oils (the most common being
triglycerides -TAGs)
2. phospholipids
3. steroids (e.g. cholesterol – only in foods of animal origin, high
concentration in liver and egg yolk)
4. lipoid substances (e.g. fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E & K)
• lipids are the body’s main energy source (stored energy = 99%
lipids + 1% glycogen)
• lipids are primarily stored as TAGs in adipocytes (fat cells)
• TAGs are ∴ the major type of lipid and the major source of stored
energy in the body
