This was my assignment for the module "Psychotherapeutic Models for Intervention," in which we had to interview a person we knew, write a case study, and use a psychotherapeutic approach of our choice to explain the challenges at hand. For my case study, I used Psychoanalysis. (I have inserted the instructions for the assignment below) *** The student is expected to demonstrate a complex and critical understanding of the theoretical core tenets; Understand how and when to apply theoretical core tenets appropriately and effectively; Assess large volumes of information; Decipher appropriate elements of information that are pertinent to comprehensively understanding your client’s presentation and treatment plan; Use the appropriate theoretical structures to analyze and integrate the relevant elements in a cohesive narrative that aims to provide a potential solution or critical understanding of the case including suggestions for treatment and monitoring, where applicable. The student must identify a person who is experiencing a life challenge and conduct an interview with the person’s consent to gain insight into the presenting problem, family history, predisposing, precipitating, perpetuating, and protective factors. You could conduct the interview using an online platform (i.e. Skype, Zoom, etc.). The student must then write up a case study of the individual and further include the following:  The written case study should not exceed 1000 words and be added as an appendix (the case study is excluded from the word count for the assessment). The case study must provide insight into the presenting problem, family history, predisposing, precipitating, perpetuating and protective factors; A discussion and reflection on understanding the individual’s presenting problem and how their concerns came to be (using theoretical structures covered in this module); Suggestions in terms of the supportive intervention going forward (treatment plan, including possible referrals if necessary/appropriate); A discussion substantiating why these interventions are significant (be sure to provide evidence from the presenting case study); How you would monitor the success (or not) of the intervention process.

, Psychoanalytic Theory Applied to the Case of Tracy

Psychoanalytic theory is based on the idea that people are often unaware of the

multiple factors contributing to their maladaptive behaviors or distressing emotions.

Psychoanalytic techniques and strategies aim to make the client aware of how their

unconscious thoughts and defenses formed early in life and how it affects their

behavioral patterns, relationships, and mental health in general (Shedler, 2009). This highly

personalized form of psychotherapeutic treatment sets its goals in demonstrating how early

childhood experiences influence the way an individual's personality develops over time

(Wedding & Corsini, 2019). Good!

The following essay aims to apply psychoanalytic theory to the case of Tracy in

relation to the problems she is currently facing and better understand how they came to exist.

Good!

Psychoanalytic Theory

Based on Sigmund Freud's groundbreaking work, psychoanalytic theory significantly

impacted the psychology realm between 1856 and 1939. Throughout Freud's professional

life, psychological explanations of how the human mind functions were dominated by his

theories regarding unconscious drives, psychosexual development, and coping mechanisms

(Attached, Fernandez & Mackesy). Psychoanalysis was initially used to treat mentally ill

patients. It has since evolved into a novel idea for comprehending the human mind. Indeed!

Although Sigmund Freud was the first to use the premise that the unconscious mind governs

human behaviors as the foundation for psychoanalysis, this theory has been reevaluated and

developed throughout the past century (Attached, Fernandez, & Mackesy). Date? Good!

While traditional psychoanalysis relied on traditional techniques to achieve

counseling goals, the theoretical underpinnings have evolved to encompass multicultural

considerations and implications for psychotherapy to increase the effectiveness of this
