The chemistry of
life
Chapter 1
, terminology
Matter: Anything that possesses mass and occupies space.
Atoms: The smallest forms of particles that make up matter.
Molecule: Two or more chemically bonded atoms.
Element: A pure substance that can not be broken down into simpler substances e.g. O2
Compound: A pure substance built up of two or more different elements. The elements
are chemically connected to each other e.g. H2O.
Inorganic compound: compounds that do not have a living origin. It does not contain
carbon, except for CO2, and is not flammable.
Organic compound: compounds with a living origin. They contain the elements
C+H+O+P+S+N and are flammable.
