- Ship on way to Italy after coming from wedding of Alonso daughter, Claribel
- Aboard: Alonso, Ferdinand, Sebastian, Antonia, Gonzalo, Stephano, Trinculo
- Storm (Tempest) strikes ship
- Lightning strikes ship, it begins to sink
- On island near by, Miranda and Prospero stand on shore
- They watch shipwreck
- Miranda wants Prospero (her dad) to help the people aboard
- He assures her everything will be ine - they won’t be hurt
- He reveals: he caused the shipwreck because of their past
- Their past:
- Prospero was Duke of Milan until Antonio (his brother) plotted with Alonso
(King of Naples)
- They kidnapped Prospero and left him to die on a raft at sea
- Antonio seized Prospero’s position
- Prospero and his daughter survive because Gonzalo leaves them supplies
- Gonzalo also leaves Prospero’s books - the source of his magic and power
- Prospero and Miranda arrive on island where they’ve been chilling and living
for 12 years
- But now fortune has sent Prospero’s enemies his way, so he caused the
tempest to make things right
- After telling her the story, Prospero charms Miranda to sleep and calls Ariel
- Ariel is his spirit, a chief magical agent.

- Ariel made sure everyone got to island safely, but separated them into
groups so they think everyone else is dead
- Ariel is captive to Prospero, and reminds his master he was promised
freedom a year early if he preforms these tasks without complaining
- Prospero reminds him that he saved Ariel from a horrible fate, because he
was imprisoned in a tree by witch Sycorax and when the witch died he was
stuck there
- Prospero makes Ariel take form of sea nymph, invisible to everyone but him
- Miranda wakes up from her sleep, and they go visit Caliban
- Caliban is the servant of Prospero, and the son of the dead witch Sycorax
- Caliban doesn’t like Prospero, so Prospero and Miranda curse him ungrateful
for everything they gave and taught him
