• In Grade 8 you learnt about high-, middle- and low-income areas in urbans settlements
• You also learnt that people in rural and urban areas have different ways of living and acce
resources, we call this development geography
• Meaning of development
Means becoming better, stronger and more advanced
• Certain indicators such as population growth or number of television sets per 1000 people
inform us how the standard of living of people in a country
• We use this information to calculate the level of development in a country
Countries that have a high development we call developed countries and the countries with lo
development we call developing countries
• There are three main aspects to development:
1. Economic aspects
2. Social aspects
3. Environmental aspects

• We refer to the countries wealth as their economic aspect of development
• There are different indicators of economic development, one of which is per capit
income
This means the average amount of money each person earns a year
• Another important economic aspects is how the country earns their money
Developing countries usually earn their income from primary activities, such as fishing
developed countries earn theirs from secondary, manufacturing goods, or tertiary acti
such as computer programming services
