• PLAN — Thorough planning is the foundation of a good essay. You are not required to submit
your planning.
• ACTIVE — Write your essay in the third person, present tense and using the active voice.
• THESIS — Use a thesis statement to clarify your argument.
• WORDS — Include an accurate word count at the end.
• EVIDENCE — Support each point you make with evidence from the text.
• LINKS — Link ideas and paragraphs together smoothly and logically.
• LENGTH — Do not exceed the specified word limit.
Section A: Literary essays
- The purpose of a literary analysis essay is to carefully examine and sometimes
evaluate a work of literature or an aspect of a work of literature. As with any
analysis, this requires you to break the subject down into its component parts.
