1. The difference between criminal and civil cases is:
A criminal case takes place between two parties: the state and the accused. In
the name of a criminal case, the name of the first party will always be the letter
“S” which refers to the state. Then the letter “v” follows which represents
“versus” and lastly the name of the other party, the accused (S v Nkosi). The
purpose of a criminal case is to prosecute and punish someone (the accused) for
a crime in order to protect the community as a whole. The outcome of a criminal
case is for the court to find the accused guilty or not guilty.
