ASSIGNMENT 3 2022

ESSAY TOPIC:

It is commonly accepted that reading books improves literacy and general
knowledge. Similarly, having a good grasp of language can lead to greater
success in other subjects, such as maths, social sciences, life skills and so
on.

Do you agree with the above statement?
In an essay of 1500 words (2.5 typed pages), state whether you agree or disagree
with the statement above. Then discuss why you believe that reading books might
improve a learner’s ability to perform academically in other subjects. Alternatively,
discuss why you believe that reading books is not necessary for good academic
performance in other subjects.

, I agree with the statement that it is commonly accepted that reading books improves literacy
and general knowledge. Similarly, having a good grasp of language can lead to greater
success in other subjects, such as maths, social sciences, life skills and so on.

Your vocabulary and general knowledge will expand and your literacy will increase as more
books are read and understood by you, thus reading is a win-win situation. The same
argument might be made for the language itself. Language is an indispensable part of our
daily lives because it serves two goals. Those who speak a language are able to decipher its
complex system of coded verbal communication. A few languages that come to mind are
English, Xitsonga, Tshivenda, and Swahili, to name just a few. Particularly in the context of
education, it is also possible to classify language as a communicative phenomenon.
Classroom activities, learning processes, academic content, evaluations of student
knowledge and competency, and other aspects of classroom life are all communicated in
both vocal as well as written form by instructors and students alike. Language acquisition is
also a common course of study for college students. They learn how to converse and write
academically in both oral and written forms.

Increasing one's literacy and broadening one's understanding begins with regular reading.
Reading and boosting pupils' literacy skills can improve students' capacity to focus and
concentrate. In addition to this, the reader is compelled to go deep into their own thinking in
order to understand the subject matter, even if the reader is unfamiliar with it. Once the book
is set down, the reader will be better able to focus on a single subject rather than many
different ones. When someone reads, they have a greater potential to retain new
information. Information this strong should be available to everyone on the earth who is
literate. Increased understanding of the world and what is going on in the immediate
surroundings can be gained through remembering more information.

Having a good command of the English language is essential to any other educational
endeavour. Numeracy and literacy can be improved by raising literacy levels in a population.
For all other educational endeavours, literacy serves as a starting point. A community's
numeracy level can be improved if more people are able to read. You need to start paying
attention to your child's literacy skills as soon as possible because of this Learning to read
and write isn't enough; you must also teach your students how to read and show them how it
may enrich their lives. Because of this, it is imperative that you pay close attention to your
child's literacy abilities as soon as he or she can read. In other words, it's like the adage
says, "If you give an animal food, it will sustain its life. If you educate a man how to hunt, it
will sustain its life." An individual who is taught the art of fishing can feed himself for the rest
of his life rather than rely on a single meal.
