,LO1: Investigate different operating systems, their functions and user
interfaces

P1: Explore what an operating system is.

What is an Operating System: An operating system is a primary software
which manages all the hardware and other software on computer or other
devices. The operating system is also known as “OS” interfaces with the
computer’s hardware and provides services that end-user can use. In simple
word we can say operating system is a software which acts as an interface
between the end-users and computer hardware.

Importance of Operating Systems: An operating system is a core set of
software on a device that keeps everything together. Operating System helps to
communicate with the device’s hardware. We can say that operating systems
handle everything from our keyboard and mice to the Wi-Fi radio, storage
devices, and display. Basically operating system handles input and output
devices. Where it is important that device drivers are written by hardware
creators to communicate with their devices.

, Where is Operating System used: Operating system are not only used for
desktop PCs and laptops. But our smartphone tablets, smart TVs, gamming
consoles, smart watches, and Wi-Fi routers.
Operating System includes:
 Microsoft Windows
 Apple macOS
 Google’s Chrome OS
 Linux

Types of Operating Systems: As the very first operating system was made
the operating system have kept evolving with time to make it more and more
easy to use for the end-users.
 Batch Operating System: In this operating system user will prepare the
job and hand it to a computer operator in form of a device. The computer
operator then groups the jobs according to their computing requirements
and execute them in a batch to ensure faster processing speed.
 Multiprogramming Operating System: As its name suggest
multiprogramming operating system is an operating system that is
capable of running multiple programs at the same time.
 Time Sharing Operating System: This operating system is designed to
accommodate multiple users. Where multiple users can use the same
computer resources.
 Distributed Operating System: This operating system was coming to
use when computer networks were developed to allow standalone
computers to communicate with each other.
 Network Operating System: As its name suggest network operating
system runs on a server and allows computers network to access the
computing resources.
 Real-Time Operating System: This operating system has to guarantee
that the events will be processed in a given time. As these system might
allow multi-tasking but with special algorithms for scheduling to ensure
that switching of tasks takes place according to their jobs priorities.
