,1. INTRODUCTION

Listening and speaking skills are used by learners daily in both their Home Language and First Additional Language (FAL). Developing a strong
oral foundation is particularly important when learning Afrikaans (FAL) as learners are exposed to frequent simple, spoken Afrikaans to assist
their language proficiency (DBE, 2011: 8). Learners are first officially introduced to Afrikaans (FAL) in Grade 1 and as their understanding
develops they need to be given plenty of opportunities in which they are encouraged to speak Afrikaans in simple and meaningful ways, thus
laying the basis for learning to read and write in Afrikaans as they progress to Grade 2 and Grade 3 (DBE, 2011: 8). The Curriculum and
Assessment Statement Policy for Afrikaans (FAL) uses an ‘additive bilingualism’ approach which focuses on developing a strong literacy
foundation in learners Home Language so that they can transfer these skills when learning Afrikaans (FAL).
