If a curriculum developer wants to prepare learners for instance for the 21st
century, what should be the knowledge and skills to be included, in particular
for the diverse South African context? These skills are listed under 1.2.5 in your
text book. Please provide an EXAMPLE after each of these competencies in
your own words.
1. Sense making- to determine deeper meaning.
Example- observes, identify and share the accuracy knowledge and skills
acquired.
2. Social intelligence- the ability of the learners to connect with other learners
on a social level in order to understand themselves and others.
Example- Knowing when to talk or listen, knowing what to say and what to
do. Having timing.
3. Novel and adaptation thinking- the ability to think and come up with
solutions that are beyond the rules.
Example- Having the ability to planning, recognize unexpected situations
and quickly consider possible response.
4. Cross-cultural competency- the knowledge and skills individuals have to
adapt effectively in different cultural environments.
, Example- designing a task where learners conduct a research on a culture
excepts their own culture to ensure that traditions within that culture are
understood.
5. Computational thinking- the ability to translate big amount of data into
abstract concepts.
Example- Problem solving like abstract and analyse.
6. New media literacy- Being able to effectively access, organize, analyse,
evaluate and create messages in variety of forms.
Example- to be involved in interactive social media in order to acquire
knowledge of using technology.
7. Transdisciplinary- literacy in and ability to understand concepts across
multiple disciplines.
Example- Being able to write a report on research done in several subjects
using the basic language rules of report writing.
8. Design mind-set- Ability to represent and develop tasks and work processes
for desired outcomes.
Example- Designing a new recipe for baking bread or using mind maps.
9. Cognitive load management- ability to discriminate and filter information for
important and to understand how to maximize cognitive functioning using a
