THORACIC CAGE
, INTRODUCTION
• Thorax: part of the body between neck and abdomen
• Chest: superior part of the trunk that is broadest inferiorly
• Thoracic cavity shaped like a truncated cone
• Narrow superiorly
• Circumference increase inferiorly
• Reach maximum at junction with abdomen
• Wall of thorax relatively thin
• Thoracic cage supported by ribs, sternum and thoracic vertebrae
• Floor formed by thoracic diaphragm
• Diaphragm deeply concave inferiorly to accommodate abdominal viscera
• Consequently lower half of thoracic wall surrounds abdominal viscera
• Thus thorax smaller than its external appearance
• Thorax includes primary organs of respiration and CVS
