- Oral history and education were based on oral traditions, oral culture and
oral Lore. It broadly transmitted messages or testimonies that were
transmitted orally from one generation to another. These testimonies
also took form of ballads songs or chants. The main focus of this oral
history was to teach children, men and women about morality, religion,
philosophy, wisdom, geography, history, politics and the entire spectrum
of human existence in the various communities. Oral history was sacred
for the generations to survive.
2. Draw out the distinction between formal and informal learning in the pre-
colonial context. [5]
- Informal schooling refers to the way children and adults learnt in
precolonial society, i.e. there were no formal schools with classrooms and
timetables. People learnt work skills and life skills from experience. This
differs from formal schooling which has an emphasis on literacy and
abstract textbook learning. Skills were transmitted by older members of
the community, from the family. So there were no trained teachers as we
know them today. People learnt through oral testimony. Oral histories
were an important means of transmitting social skills and morality. Oral
histories were transmitted from one generation to the next generation
through the medium of histories, stories and songs. In a formal the goals
and objectives are defined by training department, instructional designer
and/or instructor. Formal learning includes classroom instructions,
remote labs, seminars etc.
