HRPYC 81 - PROJECT 4805 - ASSIGNMENT 26. Name and briefly discuss 5 purposes of a literature review. To help you with this, study Chapter 2 of your prescribed book (Terre Blanche et al., 2006) on ‘Doing an information search’, as well as information on the literature review in this and other tutorial letters. [10 marks] 1 Identifying knowledge gaps and developing a research problem: to be practical, the identified research problem has to clearly stated with explicit parameters. 2 Identifying a theoretical framework: refining a research problem, includes identifying a theoretical framework upon which to base the research. 3 Identifying issues and variables related to the research topic: Reading literature helps the researcher to focus on important issues and variables that have a bearing on the research question. 4 Identifying conceptual and operational definitions: It is an important aspect of the research process to provide clear and unambiguous definitions of key concepts. 5 Executing the search: researchers need to know where to look and search for sources of information most likely to yield literature about the topic. 2 Activity 2: Name and briefly discuss 5 qualities of a well-written literature review. [10 marks] 1 Interpretation: the literature reviewers should be active rather than passive in conducting their reviews. 2 Selection: an adequate sample of information collected should be present to represent the body of knowledge 3 Relevant: Each piece of information should be connected clearly to the topic. 4 Summarization: to concisely and accurately describe each source of information. 5 Analysis” To examine each selected source and determining its essential features. Activity 3: We did a literature search on the topic (moral development during adolescence) and selected a number of relevant articles for you. You now need to search for five additional, recent (no older than six year) articles on this topic. Keep your research problem in mind, and focus on recent (and relevant) research articles on factors influencing moral development in adolescence. (Remember to include the details of these articles in your reference list in Assignment 27, the research report). Provide a reference list of your 5 sources by strictly adhering to the American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines (See PSYHONM Tutorial Letter 103 point 5.2 for guidelines). Your reference list will be evaluated for the relevance of the articles, how recent (newly published) they are, their status (peer-reviewed journal versus an Internet communication) as well as for the accuracy of the references according to the APA reference system. (2009) Psychology, Themes & Variants. United States of America: Thomson Wadsworth. Activity 4: Write a literature review of 10 pages. Read all the prescribed sources as well as your five additional sources and any other relevant material you could find. Follow the guidelines on how to write a literature review under ‘Research report’ below. Keep your title and your research problem in mind when you write your literature review and remember to provide the title and research problem. The following themes and subthemes may help to get you started: Moral development as a key developmental issue during adolescence:  Different views regarding moral development  The importance of morality during adolescence Aspects related to moral development during adolescence:  Identity formation and development  Ethical values, principles and morality  Relationship with parents (e.g. parental warmth, parent-interaction, discipline and parental role models)  Other relevant factors as identified in the literature and relevant to your research study A conclusion combining the two main themes above. You will probably have to re-write your literature review a couple of times before you will be satisfied with it. After completing your literature review, attach the review (10 pages only) to your Answer Booklet as Appendix A. You need the literature review to answer Questions 5, 6 and 7. (Note that we will only scan-read your literature review and make some general suggestions, but we need it as proof that you have done the work.) If your literature review is not attached as Appendix A to the Answer Booklet, Activities 5, 6 and 7 will also not be marked. If you do the literature review properly now, it will save you a lot of time later when you have to write your research report. [10 marks]1 . 1 Note that your literature review will count more in the final research report (Assignment 27). 7 8 4 Tip: Provide only information relevant to your research topic and keep your hypotheses in mind when writing your literature study. For example: information on the effect of broken homes (divorce) or living in an orphanage on moral development is not relevant, since the purpose of the research project is not about the effect of these aspects on moral development. You will also not receive statistical data on these issues (therefore your hypotheses should also not include irrelevant variables). Activity 5: Draw a mind map on the following page to illustrate the main aspects of your literature review. Use your research problem as anchor for the mind map. Do not write an essay or long paragraphs, but make use of words or short sentences in an illustrative way. It should be clear with one glance what was discussed in your literature review, and how it relates to the research problem. [20 marks]
