1.1. Environment

Environment refers to the sum total of nearby things, conditions, or effects; the state of
being environed" and the verb "to environ" as meaning "to make a circle or ring around."
(University of South Africa, 2011: 12)



1.2. Environmental education

Environmental education is to provide people with the required knowledge,
understanding, attitudes, skills, and dedication to ensure a healthy and properly
functioning environment that is both sustainable and good for our children (University of
South Africa, 2011: 18). This is true for individuals' local environs as well as regional
and global environments (University of South Africa, 2011: 18).



1.3. Biodiversity

Biodiversity refers to the diversity of all life on Earth, including the many plants, animals,
and microorganisms (Queensland Government, 2014), as well as their genes and the
terrestrial, marine, and freshwater habitats in which they live (Queensland Government,
2014).



1.4. Global warming

Global warming is a slow rise in the earth's temperature caused by the greenhouse
effect (ByJu’s), which is exacerbated by growing quantities of carbon dioxide, CFCs,
and other pollutants in the atmosphere (ByJu’s).

Environmental studies encompass all aspects of the environment, including ecology,
biology, geography, and agriculture.



1.6. Urbanisation

The rise of towns and cities as people migrate from rural areas to urban centres in
search of a better life is referred to as urbanisation (IMP Center). It is a process in which
individuals move from rural to urban areas in quest of better social and economic
prospects such as higher education (IMP Center), better health care, decent sanitation,
comfortable housing, vast business options, and flexible transportation (IMP Center).



1.7. Sustainability

Sustainability refers to environmental health, social fairness, and economic viability are
all intertwined in order to produce prosperous (UCLA), healthy, diverse, and resilient
communities for this generation and future generations (UCLA).



1.8. Gardener’s multiple intelligence theory

The theory describes individuals’ aptitude or tendency to perform well in certain types of
learning contexts (University of South Africa, 2011: 88).



1.9. Curriculum development

Curriculum is a set of principles, criteria, and instructions that assure an organized,
planned, and well-founded path for teaching-learning situations (University of South
Africa, 2011: 127). A curriculum is thus a detailed statement of the learning objectives to
be fulfilled, the precise content to be taught, and the methods and evaluation
procedures to be used (University of South Africa, 2011: 127).
