A statement made by Urie Bronfenbrenner “that human beings create the environments that shape the course of human development” (Bronfenbrenner, 1979), is very true. We are living in our created reality. We are active producers of our own development. I intend to unpack and explain this in context how life Orientation at schools can be used to facilitate and develop individual health, school and community health. Teachers, plan a part in creating a healthy ecology in the schools. The overall purpose of life Orientation is to teach life skills to students. This includes physical and mental health. Its important to have a health body and healthy mind as this promotes good and effective learning.

Introduction

A statement made by Urie Bronfenbrenner “that human beings create the
environments that shape the course of human development” (Bronfenbrenner,
1979), is very true. We are living in our created reality. We are active producers of
our own development. I intend to unpack and explain this in context how life
Orientation at schools can be used to facilitate and develop individual health, school
and community health. Teachers, plan a part in creating a healthy ecology in the
schools. The overall purpose of life Orientation is to teach life skills to students. This
includes physical and mental health. Its important to have a health body and healthy
mind as this promotes good and effective learning.

The CAPS document is relevant as it aims to teach students the importance of
health in their development. One of the core subjects is physical education where
students participate in physical fitness and safety, including developing traditional
sport skills. The students must participate in programs that increase fitness levels.
This helps improve a student’s concentration levels and promotes a good mood and
helps with stress resilience. At my current practical school placement, I saw how the
students were taught self - defence. In spite of COIVD they could still learn and
practice these activities, which they thoroughly enjoyed. Students will also be taught
and guided to make responsible decisions about their own health and health of
others. They will learn about the importance of the value of physical activity. The
development of self in society covers topics such as recreation and emotional health
in grade 10. Gender roles and their effects on health and wellbeing in grade 11 and
Human factors that cause ill-health and an plan for involvement in some form of
exercise.
These activities promote a healthy life- style choice at school for individual students
which later will be carried on to the community as they grow up to be responsible
adults. Their healthy values and choices will have an impact on their families and
community as a whole.
The CAPS document also teaches other healthy and balanced life-style choices
such as avoiding risky behaviour. The negative effect of substance abuse and
sexually transmitted diseases.

According to the WHO1 information series on skills for health. Children need to be in
a healthy environment to learn effectively. Health and education go together. The
basic premise is that a sick unhealthy student cannot learn well. Many scientific
studies show that bad nutritional status affects a child’s mental performance and
exam scores. In third world countries where clean water is not available can lead to
parasitic infections in children, resulting in absenteeism. Students that attend school
have better health because they learn how to manage their health and make wise
eating and diet habits. Attending school and staying in school until grade 12 has
many benefits, beside the educational parts. They have more opportunities for work
and further education.
Education for health is an central part of all educational and public health program.
Because it helps defends children from environmental and behavioural risks. It also
should support policy and services. Over the decades, promoting health education
has and still is an important strategy to prevent illness and injury. In light of the
current COVID situation. Hygiene and cleanliness have been promoted to prevent
the spread of the pandemic. Without correct educational measure, the virus would
spread more. Just like what has happened in India. This could be because of
allowing mass gatherings and not wearing masks. Lack of water and cleanliness in
certain parts of India that lack clean water sanitizers. Those that are educated about
simple health matters are more likely not to get sick.
Developmental problems and challenges face by leaners in South Africa.
Teachers, parents and students create a healthy ecology at the school and wider
community. According to Nel, a healthy environment has an impact on learner’s
health. And health also impacts effective learning. Its therefore important that a
school be a healthy environment conducive for learning. The school’s responsibility
is to make sure health threats are reduced. Such as the current pandemic, measure
must be put in place to prevent the spread the virus and students getting sick.
Another example is keeping the school safe from crime and gangsterism. Which
does affect the wider community.
Developmental problems that some students can have include Anxiety.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Cerebral Palsy.
Conduct Disorder (CD)
Depression.
Developmental Disabilities.
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. These problems can affect their learning. An
unhealthy school environment will aggravate these health problems.
