, QUESTION 1

Nelson, one of the children in your class, does not look healthy. His stomach looks
bloated, and his skin looks dry and scaly. Apart from often falling sick and skipping school,
Nelson also seems to be tired most of the time, and his teeth are decayed. On following
up on Nelson’s family background, you discover that he comes from a poor family and
that his parents are unemployed.

1.1 In your own words, explain what the cause of Nelson’s condition might be and what
factors could be contributing to the condition.

Nelson is suffering from a condition called MALNUTRITION – because he is not well fed.

SIDE NOTE: The following are symptoms of malnutrition:

• Due to stunted growth, energy levels are very low – The learner will be much smaller than
his or her peers and might not be able to compete and participate in activities for the
acquired length of time. Not eating a balanced diet can result in low muscle tone, lethargy,
poor concentration and, quite possibly, also depression.

• Frequent illness as resistance to germs is low – school attendance will be affected.

• Personality changes, as children feel irritable and nervous – this will have an impact on
feeling safe and secure.

• Intelligence may be affected if there was severe malnutrition in the very early years, as
development of the brain cells is affected. Learning ability is reduced, as the child lacks
concentration.

NB: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LIST THE SYMPTOMS
