 James Naismith
 A Canadian physical educator at the Young Men’s Christian Association in Springfield
Massachusetts
 He organized vigorous recreation suitable for indoor activity
― that would showcase new talent
― help keep people active during the winter months
 The first used ball was a soccer ball
 Each team had 9 players
 The goal posts were wooden fruit baskets affixed to the wall



In South Africa:
 Created in 1953
 Major improvement between 1992-1994
― a Professional Basketball League with 8 teams was launched
― operated until the season 1998-1999
 PBL was modeled on the Australian NBL
 BSA (the South African governing body for basketball)
― was included as a shareholder/partner
― with financial contributions from PBL

― recognized as the sole competent authority in basketball by SASCOC

 PBL was the driving force behind basketball programs in that time
