Language is something that is always contextualised; therefore writers produce
written work in a variety of ways. For any text that is produced a number of aspects
contribute to its distinctiveness. The purpose of the text, content, social and register
are factors that add towards the production of different texts. The intention of this
essay is to carefully examine the genre and register used in the text provided and
how it contributed to the writers overall purpose. May and Max ate it. He likes it.
In the text provided by Atlas Obscura, it is clear to see that the writer‟s purpose was
to make people aware about the improper way some of us discard of our personal
protective equipment (PPE) and its harmful affect on the wildlife. The target audience
or market is basically all those people who care for the wildlife and our environment.
A text structure refers to the way in which information in a written abstract is
organized. The overall structure of the article provided can be seen as a problem
with a possible solution, which is evident in the method in which Text A is laid out.
From the title going into the first paragraph, the reader is introduced to the writers
concerns about how COVID19 has not only affected the lives of humans, but the
lives of creatures as well. This problem is further explained and described until the
end of the text. This method of writing motivates the reader to continue reading until
the very end. Tim said he didn‟t want to go but Lay said he should go. So he did

to provide proper and reliable information to the reader, staying true to its genre as

The register in Text A can be categorized as neutral, as it is neither completely
formal nor informal. The writer‟s choice of words and style of writing displays both,
informal and formal characteristics and this is evident in the use of complex and long
sentences as well as short and simple sentences that are found throughout the text.
Additionally, the chosen register makes the text easier to read and understand. It can
also be said that Text A is not merely targeted towards a sophisticated audience but
an average demographic as well. This is evident through the use of ordinary and
common terms like „disposable‟ and „discarded‟ which is known by most people, and
the use of terms like „somersaulted‟ and „detritus‟ which may be recognized by a

first person plural makes the text appear to be more personal, creating a friendly
