, QUESTION 1

1. Briefly illustrate the various aspects which oral history focused on when
teaching children, men and women about morality:
Oral history and education were based on oral tradition, oral culture, and oral
lore, which are commonly messages or even testimonies that took the form of
ballads, songs, or chants, and are passed on orally from one generation to
another. The main focus of oral history was to teach children, men, and
women about morality, religion, philosophy, wisdom, geography, history,
politics, and the whole spectrum of human existence in the different
communities.

2. Draw out the distinction between formal and informal learning in the pre-
colonial context:
The word “informal” refers to the way children, and adults, learned in pre-
colonial education. There were no formal schools with classrooms and
timetables. People acquired work and life skills from experiences. This is
different than formal schooling which emphasises literacy and abstract
textbook learning. Skills were passed on by older members of the community
and from the family. Thus, there were no trained teachers as we know them
today. People learned through oral testimonies. Oral histories were an
important part of passing on social skills and morality, and the medium of
histories, stories and songs was used to transmit them from one generation
the next.

3. How would you explain the social activities in which song and dance
played a significant role for the pre-colonial societies?
The co-existence of different and synchronized rhythms produced a strong
sense of community and a highly interactive mode of learning. People have
used song and dance to communicate joy or sadness and to strengthen
cultural beliefs and values. Song and dance were often seen as living records
of past and present affairs and traditions. The social norms, traditions, and
beliefs of a community were represented through music and dance. Song and
dance also played a significant role in marriages, funerals, initiation rituals,
and religious practices.

4. Mention FIVE of the main activities which were carried out at mission
schools:
• It taught basic reading and writing literacy.
• It taught Christian doctrine.
• It taught manual work and practical training.
• It trained black people to help with the work of spreading the Gospel.
• It trained boys to be carpenters, blacksmiths, etc.
