, QUESTION 1

a) Describe in your own words the following concepts and give one example of
each:

(i) Multicultural education:
This is a strategy aimed at changing the environment so that different kinds of
groups, including ethnic groups, experience educational and academic fairness.
Example:
Our country’s education system aims to be multicultural and has attained this to a
certain degree in some schools, especially those in big urban centres.

(ii) Prejudice:
We can describe prejudice as a judgement or opinion against or in support of a
person or thing formed without knowing all the facts.
Example:
You dislike someone because they do not share your culture or religion, or they
come from a different city than you.

(iii) Assimilation:
This means that members of smaller groups in the community must follow and
embrace the values, norms, and language of the greater and dominant social
groups.
Example:
If a Pedi woman marries a man of another culture than her own.

b) (i) Describe any TWO different social groups of learners that exist in the
school where you teach or know:
• Language groups – I teach at an English school, but most of the learners
have another language as their Home Language. In other words, they are
being taught in their First or Second Additional Language.
• Ethnic groups – there are various ethnic groups at the school where I teach.

ii) In your opinion, do the two groups enjoy the same quality of education?
Yes, these two groups do enjoy the same quality of education, as they are all taught
by the same teachers and they all receive the same amount and type of work. No
group is advantaged or disadvantaged.

c) Explain how a teacher could promote prejudice education reduction in
multicultural education:

Teachers can allocate leadership roles, responsibilities, and tasks in a fair and
impartial manner. This means allocating tasks to all the learners, and not just certain
learners. They can also put an end to separated social and play areas, so that the
learners all play together, and not just in their own social groups. Teachers can avoid
grouping learners based on gender or race and they can encourage learners to take
part in activities that are non – traditional.
