Approaches About, In and For the environment are important for teaching about
environmental issues and problems. Describe why and how you could use the approach
of IN the environment for EE if you were working in the context as described in the case
study. Discuss what this approach entails and then describe how you would apply it in this
context for a school subject of your choice

Approaches About, In and For the environment are important for teaching about environmental
issues and problems. This mini essay will specially be referring to education in the environment
with reference to the ISCOR Probes Poisoned Fish After Blast case study.
Education IN the environment is an approach where learners can experience the environment at
first hand. This is a learner-centred approach in Environmental Education aims to make reality,
relevance, and practical experience apart of the learning process and to ‘equip’ learners with
feelings of appreciation for the environment through direct contact with the environment.
Education serves as a communication medium to spread messages and ideas amongst people and
environmental education is the key response to environmental crises. in this case, using this
approach in environmental education, the learners in the community could be led to the Buffalo
River itself and see the aftereffects of the explosion. Learners could also interview the surrounding
community who rely on that water, who may have consumed the dead fish, those involved with
the gas explosion, or anyone who came into contact with the water. By doing this, the learners’
skills are being developed and furthered as they are observing, collecting data, making use of
apparatus, and using social skills. In cases where learners could not psychically go into this
environment specially, learners would be encouraged to use the internet to their advantage and
research the gas explosion, interviews reporters had with the neighbouring community, farmers,
children, families or anyone who was in contact with this water or the dead fish. Learners could
write their own reports on the issue and how this is not a sustainable way of living. They could
spread awareness to the public about the water contamination and provide solutions with accessing
cleaner water and food elsewhere as many people rely on the river for sanitation, cooking, and for
food.
When the learners are in contact with this environment, a sense of caring and affection is attached
and therefore opinions amongst them are created about negative affects to the environment.
Learners will automatically be inclined to want to prevent crises after they have seen the
destruction it has caused. It will be made clear to the learners that humans are at the root of all
environmental problems.
In relation to the school subject Life Orientation, this specific case study can be used as a topic or
themed approach. Learners can be introduced to a theme of environmental education and use case
studies such as this to understand the impact that humans have on the environment through their
education. Learners need to be educated that they and everyone have an impact on the environment
and can be an action for change. Educating the learners about the social, economic, political, and
