Concentrated ammonia solution is an irritant. If the fumes are inhaled they will cause
irritation to the respiratory system. Concentrated ammonia must always be used in a fume
cupboard.



1. What is the hazard associated with concentrated ammonia?

The hazard which is linked to the concentrated ammonia is the flammable sign.



2. What is the risk associated with concentrated ammonia?

If the concentrated ammonia solution fume is inhaled it will cause irritation to the
respiratory system making it difficult for the person to breathe.



3. What action must be taken to minimise the risk of harm from using concentrated
ammonia?

To minimise the risk of harm the fume cupboard should be used to store the harmful fume.
The person should use a face mask to prevent the inhalation of the toxic fumes.

Toxic -

The sign to the side means that once a material that is toxic enters the body it may
cause harm to the person if it is entered through the body.



Flammable -

The sign to the side is called flammable which refers to materials and substances
that could self-ignite themselves if they come in contact with water, with oxygen or
substances which give off flammable.



Corrosive -

The sign to the side is called corrosive which refers to a substance which has
properties which could cause damage which is irreversible and could even kill another
substance if they come in contact with them.
