LE JEUNE HOMME ET LE VIEILLARD

Poeme

Oh ! trop pénible est cette vie ;

Elle est trop vile ;

Translation

, J:Please, teach me how to make a fortune,
a young, ambitious man asked his father.
V:That is, said the old man, a glorious path:
It means making yourself useful to the common cause (public service),
Giving your days (lavishly) one’s waking hours, one’s talents
In the service of the country.
J:Oh, this life is too painful
I want less brilliant (impressive, intelligent) methods.
V:There are more certain ways… immoral methods (illicit)
J:That is too wicked
Without vice (crime) and without work, I would like to become rich.
V: Well! Just be a simple idiot,
I’ve seem lots of them succeed.
