COMPUTER INTEGRATION IN THE CLASSROOM
, QUESTION 1:
1.
1.1. a.) How will you as an educator cope with issues relating to access of resources (Digital Divide) in your classroom? Use your own words to
explain the six practical strategies for teaching across the digital divide in a limited resource school.
1. Determine how many students have access:
By conducting a short and anonymous survey in the school, it can be determined how many students in the school have internet access at
their homes or at school and surrounding places like internet cafes or libraries (especially after school hours). This can help when homework
and projects are arranged. It is also necessary to find out which resources and what technology is accessible and available to the learners in
the school, as well as the platforms being used, the internet speed and the school’s policies around internet access.
2. Determine computer literacy amongst students:
Before assigning homework or projects based on requirements such as computer and internet skills – first find a way to determine how
many students (as well as their parents) are computer literate enough to be able to complete the aforementioned. This can be achieved
through a survey or otherwise.
3. Provide appropriate resources as an alternative:
Students who do not have access to digital devices or the internet – or the required literacy to be able to use them – should be
appropriately accommodated. The teacher (I) can help with certain required resources like printing or providing necessary resource packs in
order to help them finish the assignment or project, without giving them an advantage above the other students or even putting them at a
disadvantage. Use your knowledge gathered by the first two steps to draw up a matrix of access opportunities and focus on the positive,
working with what you have and allow space for creativity. It’s important that all learners have equal opportunities.
