are learnt by our own particular theories that we create through interacting with
others and our environment. Even if we are not aware of it, we continually draw on
our own theories when we act and make sense of our experiences. Gravett

learning. Learning from experience, and so stimulating and extending our personal
theories, requires reflection.
Even though we continually reflect on what we have encountered in our own
environment, we only have experience in that personal environment. This is where
theory (formal knowledge) comes in as it gives us a broader perspective. To
understand our filed of practise we need to have a thorough understanding of our
field to effectively function in complex situations – and teaching is a complex
endeavour according to Gravett.
It essence, practice alone cannot give you the full understanding to function
effectively in our field as we require theory (formal knowledge) as well.
