furthered his studies in international law
We meet him when he is acting as leading negotiator for
the ruling party
Also excellent spin doctor who saved the ruling party from
many situations
He was part of the team that negotiated the constitution
After Germany he decided to join the party as active
‘soldier’ and to do whatever they needed from him rather
than becoming a bureaucrat
He is a former student leader
He is passionate about the new South Africa new south
Africa and is committed to the success of the country
He is eloquent with strong principles
Loyal and hardworking
From his conversations with Gabby we see that he is firm
yet sensitive and soft
He has a conscious but his commitment to the party is
crucial to him
Gabby Anderson
43 year old white South African woman from a liberal
family
She studied English, psychology and politics at
university
Also joined the National Union of South African
Students
She left South Africa at the age of 24 with her life
partner Aaron to escape his detention as well as their
constant harassment as a mixed race couple by the
apartheid government
, They moved to east Germany where they have a child
named Matthew
She spent her time there raising Matthew and did some
work for Radio Freedom
They returned to South Africa in 1992
She got a job as a personal assistant to Mr Khumalo, a
black minister who would possibly become vice
president before the next election
Gabby comes across as sensitive and genuinely loves
Aaron and her family
Has strong principles but does not necessarily have the
courage needed to do the right thing and is not very
emotionally strong
Anna Richards
44 year old lawyer/advocate with her own firm
She is divorced and has two daughters
She is a feminist – more so than her friend Gabby
They have been good friends for a long time and share
everything with each other
She is a strong woman and her life experiences have
made her cynical about men, love and life in general
Inspector Theo Abrahams
54 year old coloured man who serves on the police force
During apartheid he worked in the security branch of the
police force
After the change in government he received amnesty from
the TRC and requested placement in the violent crimes
unit
He is a genuine man and a good policeman who wants to
do good work
Under the apartheid government he genuinely thought he
was fighting communism and was not part of and privy to
