Mitosis
Division of the nucleus into two genetically identical daughter cells

- Chromosomes become condensed (fatter and shorter) via supercoiling
- Nucleolus breaks down
- Centrosomes move to opposite poles
- Microtubules form from centrosomes
o Microtubules = spindle fibres
- Nuclear membrane/envelope breaks down and nucleus dissolves

Metaphase
- Microtubules continue to grow and attach to centromeres
o Centromere: centre point of a chromosome
- Microtubules depolymerisation causes contract in length
- Chromosomes align at centre of cell (equatorial plane)
